Gerry at the market week 2
Unfortunately the Gerry at the market series is coming to an end as he is leaving ol' Blighty for a 3 month holiday in sunnier climes. LA, Australia and Thailand to name a few of the lovely spots he will visit. Today is his last day in the office so I thought I would post pics from the last outing we had to Borough Market. As usual Gerry is a stage hound so posed appropriately for the pics. I am trying to figure out how to post a pic of him in his fluorescent green, Borat man-kini on the blog?! It is hilarious. Maybe will have to write about food in Kazakhstan and slip the pic into the story.

At our last outing to the Market I opted for the scallop wrap again as I couldn't resist and Gerry diversified and got the fish and chips from the FishKitchen!

Fish! restaurant located in the market also have a standalone take away stand. Owner of the Fish! group of companies Tony Allan started with the fish restaurant at Borough in 1999 and now has this little fish and chip shop and owns Jarvis The Fishmonger in Kingston which sells fish to wholesale and retail customers. Fresh, sustainable and good quality fish is part of their mantra. And only fish. Their restaurant menu is 99% fish and their Fish! stand sells only fish and chips. Specialize and you will become an expert!
If Gerry goes to the market today will get him to take a farewell pic for the readers. The Cottle family are born entertainers (they had the largest circus in the UK at one point) so am sure I will have more Gerry news in the future! Have a great trip Geronimo! x

A chip aboveUpon recommendations by many, we finally got to try out Chippy's on Queen St. West and I have to say I think the battered cod was the best I have ever had.

I always think I like fish and chips but then when I order it I remove all of the batter from it which I feel defeats the purpose, non? At Chippy's there was no such removals. The batter was so thin on the fish it was delicious and with each bite you could taste both fish and light batter, it was divine! I ate the whole thing quickly with no leftovers . The chips were also nice and fresh, you could see some poor girl pumping potatoes into a machine in the back - must be a hard job to do all day .

Get to Chippy's to taste some great fish and chips and see the boys in the shop moving like lightning to some great music while serving customers.

Egg on top?Kaiaua Fisheries, located on Coast Road, Kaiaua - apparently the best fish and chips place in NZ. When Robbie and Pat took me there he ordered his with an egg on top! I have never seen that done before. Kaiaua is such a small, quaint place near Waikato and the farm. The service is great and the food is even better. It is apparently Buns' favorite place to eat fush and chups (as the Kiwis say).

I had a craving for fish and chips today and perhaps next time I order it I will ask for an egg on top. I wonder if that is a Kiwi thing or they will serve it to me like that at Chippy's on Queen Street W? That is the only fish and chips place I can think of in this city.

Chippy's have a great website (look at the pic below - it makes your mouth water, non?) and the menu looks good too, will have to take the Brit when she gets here as am sure she is missing some Brit-style food on her travels. Review of Chippy's to come...

Fush N Chups

This fish and chip dinner bought in Maida Hill two weeks ago is what some may call dinner. I call it grease/heart attack central. Although it tastes good it is just deep fried and not providing any omega 3 or anything else your health book may recommend.

And not sure if you can see the scale in the picture the fish was enormous!

It was an apres journalism class snack for one kiwi writer....

But the brits do love their fish and chips, especially on Friday. The shop in Strutton Ground market near Victoria usually has a queue out the door....
