Finally! Street food that isn't a hotdog in TO

(My comment: why are they making it so difficult and expensive for these vendors when those dirty hot dog vendors never had to go through all of this expense and training, and probably never will?!)
First two vendors open Asian/Persian and Greek carts Monday at Nathan Phillips

Seemab Ahmad will be among the first out of the gate as Toronto's new street food program gets launched.

"It's a sheer thrill,'' said an excited Ahmad, whose family owns Quick Pita on College St. As of Monday, he'll be serving central Asian/Persian dishes to adventurous street eaters.

Both Ahmad and fellow vendor Blair Bonivento will offer their fare at Nathan Phillips Square beginning on Victoria Day. Six other vendors who are part of the long-anticipated pilot project will set up at their assigned locations soon after.

Ahmad will offer biryani and salsa karahi, served with pita, chapati, naan or rice. To drink he'll have mango lassi, a smoothie-like drink made with homemade yogurt and mango pulp. He'll also have fresh-squeezed juices.

Bonivento will have Greek-themed food and breakfast sandwiches.

Nancy Senawong, a vendor who will take up her spot at Mel Lastman Square early next week, got her cart just yesterday. From it, she'll be offering tasty dishes like Thai barbecue with salad or rice, and pad thai with fresh rolls and cashew nuts – the same as what you'll find at Thai Angels, her family's restaurant on College St.

"I learned to cook from my mom in Bangkok when I was 8 or 9,'' Senawong says.

She says the key to making authentic-tasting – and looking – pad thai is using tamarind sauce, made from a tropical sweet-sour fruit. Some Thai restaurants in the city use ketchup and vinegar instead, which is cheaper, but doesn't taste nearly as good, she said.

She'll operate her cart along with sister Peggy and brother Wattana.

Peggy said she was shocked at how large and heavy the cart is. "It's big, heavy – and expensive,'' she joked yesterday, explaining the family had to take out a bank loan to get it.

The cart has a grill, a sink and a freezer, and they'll need a trailer to transport it.

Seemab Ahmad drove out to Brantford to get his cart, manufactured by Crown Verity Inc., the supplier to all eight vendors. They were trained to use the equipment safely by the company and a Toronto public health inspector.

The vendors, all independent entrepreneurs, have paid between $21,000 and $28,000 for new carts chosen by the city of Toronto. They must also pay annual location fees ranging from $5,000 to $15,000.

Ahmad has three workers already trained in food handling and plans to be selling his food at Nathan Phillips from about 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, a few hours later on weekends.

The program requires owners to spend at least 70 per cent of the operating time at the cart themselves to ensure they are owner-operated.

Only 19 applied to participate in the Toronto a la Cart program – it's believed the rigorous requirements and high costs for the carts dissuaded many – and 12 finalists made it to a taste test with a four-chef judging panel.

In the end, eight vendors were selected through a process that included scoring for nutrition, food safety, locally produced food, ethnic diversity, taste and sound business plan.

Gotta love performance artists (performance artist Jesika Joy)
The city came alive last night with Nuit Blanche, TO turned into an all night art festival. There were thousands of people everywhere, art installations everywhere and the mood and atmosphere was fantastic. It was an excellent night and I recommend that anyone who didn't go last night gets out to it next year. This is just what Toronto needs to compete with fantastic cities like London and New York. The vibe and the feel of the night was incredible.

In Zone B -two blocks of Church Street were turned into a red light district with several dancers in windows mimicking the feel of Amsterdam with live sex shows (pretend - of course), can-can dancers, pole dancing in windows and more.

This artist Jeskia Joy (see pic) was drawing quite a crowd in this red light district; she was writhing and sliding across the floor dragging this dead goat or lamb in her arms & on her back - p.s. it stank! She was mumbling and singing to herself to the delight & shock of many onlookers (shock - for those who don't get performance art). Entertaining to say the least - some dum, dums beside me (after they screeched and eek-ed) thought it was a greyhound dog -umm...duh, I don't think a skinned greyhound dog is easy to find, but yes - a goat or lamb is easy to purchase in the city and haul over your shoulder as an artiste for 7hrs.

Some other art installations were more family friendly and easier to comprehend and also entertaining, check the newspapers and online for reviews and photographs. At University of Toronto we stopped at a few other exhibits and at the String of Diamonds piece we ate some cheese and crackers. That is all we had...everywhere else the queues for food and drink were enormous. We got some drinks and snacks at 7-Eleven and saw this yummy cheese under the nacho-cheese dispensing machine - it looks grosser in real life.My only question is when is the city going to allow street vendors to sell anything more than rubbery hot dogs?! Can we not get creative like other cities. How about a Choc-star van? A van in London sells all kinds of chocolate treats (cupcakes, brownies, fudge, cake, cookies and more..) ...well it was a great night - maybe I will enter Nuit Blanche next year with a Choc-star van as a 'chocolate installation'

Oh so 'Special' Norwegian delights
There will be a series of posts on Norwegian food gathered from friends Lars, Trond and Espen who we met in Fiji. We had some long conversations about food and the Norwegian style of food. Trond and Espen are traveling the world for a year, taking a break from their jobs as chefs at one of the poshest restaurants in Norway. And Lars is the Paul McCartney look alike who is Trond's Dad (see pic below).

The trio recommended that one of the things one must eat when they are in Norway is the 'Special'.

This special hot dog is grab and go food for the Norwegians and is very popular for hang-overs. The 'Special' is made with a hot dog covered in shrimp salad (mayo, artificial shrimp and sometimes vegetables). This tops the many condiments you can find on Toronto and NY hot dog stands. Fish and hot dog- what a combo?

And if you get the special, 'Special' it is wrapped in a large flat potato pancake to hold the hot dog , shrimp surprise and all the condiments. This meal in a bun is also topped with mustard, mayo and more in case you didn't have enough flavours - yum?! Don't have a pic but will try and get one from Lars who is back in Norway. They said the best place to get these are in the gas stations. I found an interesting article then on this sausage phenomena in a Norwegian publication.

"During a lecture at a recent conference on obesity the well-known nutrition expert blasted gas station fast food, newspaper VG reports.

I believe that the sale of hot dogs and candy at gas stations should be forbidden. They should sell gas and auto parts," Norum said.

When you go into a gas station you can hardly do what you came for, namely buy gas, because there is a huge queue for sausages," Norum said.

'The total hot dog market in Norway is 39,000 tons a year, with 9,000 tons being sold in gas stations and fast food outlets."

Going to the West Side!

Went to Westside Studio's summer fete last night and the evening was perfect for an outdoor party. They had a lovely surprise for guests. Never mind fancy caterers and posh h'ors derves served by good looking waiters...they had the real summer deal.

They had two vans selling street food -they probably picked them right off of Queen Street. One was an ice cream van run by the coolest ice cream man complete with chef's hat and big moustache. And the second van was dishing out hamburgers, hot dogs and the best hand cut fries you have ever tasted.

This morning, I was excited to download all the candid shots of our evening's treats but when I went to download there was a memory card error and there are no pics to show! So I will try to describe some of what the pics were showcasing. At first there was some fresh cut and greasy french fries, ladled with vinegar and ketchup (we had 3 LARGE servings). They were long and fat and glistening with oil in the moonlight.

Then there were pics of my vanilla caramel twirl soft serve, Erin's chocolate vanilla swirl and Brendan's swirl which he got dipped in chocolate, that dirty dog didn't share that tip with us!

There were other photos of Matt in his tiki hut office, behind the bar with his fez and some with Erin and her nemesis who rode away on her bike - a little tipsy too. Maybe you will see the lovely man who served us ice cream like we were 10 year olds on the street somewhere. Just ask him if he has been to the Westside.

Hopefully someone will send some pics of the real deal and I can post them.

For now I leave you with this...eat from one of those vans again - it brings you a little nostalgia and is really fun!

FC bathing suit weather
Bathing suit weather is fast approaching am trying to get back into shape after a month of inactivity. Am trying to eat healthy and take vitamins to get back to normal after a busy and stressful month.

On my first weekend off I get a b-day gift of free tix to the Toronto FC game - thx George & Hellen!

Picture it -30+degrees the sun is shining down, smog is high, humidity is higher. We are roasting in the sun, sweating and sticking to the seats but admiring all the lovely men and the amazing atmosphere and spirit of the fans, it was great!

After about 40 min of sweaty viewing we ducked inside to get some water and food. As per the sporting venue stereotype the menu is totally not suited to anyone who is trying to be health conscious or to vegetarians.

What the new 'beemo' BMO field does have is great toilet facilities as there seems to be enough to go around without long queues of women wasting the whole break/intermission (what do you call it at a football/soccer match?) trying to make a nature call and to check their makeup. In our case to splash water on our red arms and legs!

Anyhoo back to the menu, as you will see from the pic lots of burgers, dogs, popcorn, nachos, pretzels, popcorn etc..but nothing remotely healthy. I asked if they had veggie pizza and the guy said that the 'supreme' is the veggie one. When it arrives it is laden with pepperoni and some green pepper (guess he didn't know what veggie was?!) Pizza Pizza must give these people a briefing.

But alas....as we ate our pizza we saw someone with fresh boiled corn on the cob, he told us that there was a stall only a few metres away! Next time I guess.

Get to a game it is great fun! Toronto FC won 2-1. I would love to see the Beckham game if anyone wants to get me a b-day gift still...ol' Becky in action with the LA Galaxy would be nice!

Creative Summer GatheringsWith the summer sun beaming down on us there are a lot of bbq and back yard parties going on especially as this is a long weekend -yay! Some creative invites are going around like this one and am looking forward to seeing more like this.

This one was for a simple bbq where hot dogs were the feature food. We were going to rock up at 2pm with drinks and hot dog condiments, thinking this was the time for the party but luckily called and were told that the party started around 10pm -ish!

Enjoy the sun today! Happy Victoria Day.

Victoria Day is a Canadian statutory holiday celebrated on the last Monday before or on May 24 in honour of Queen Victoria's birthday.

Veeiner
This was the dirty weiner that was consumed by someone after a large night out.

With Nat's leaving do happening this weekend on both Fri and Sat night these veiners may need to make an appearance again. This one is actually a little posh as it has some mozzarella on it. Guess who the chef was?!
